CosmoCaixa is one of the most successful museums in Barcelona. More than just a museum, CosmoCaixa facilitates passion and curiosity for the sciences through many diverse interactive activities for all families.

The museum occupies roughly 30,000 mdevoted to encouraging a passion and interest for experimentation and observation. One of the most successful museums in Barcelona, CosmoCaixa is located in the heights of city and occupies nine floors. Six of the nine floors are located underground with ample natural light. One of the floors, and definitely the museum’s most impressive aspect, is the reconstruction of the ecosystem of the Amazonian forest. Herein, you can explore the rain forest and are sure to stumble upon some piranhas, crocodiles, and many other kinds of Amazonian animals! A little more exploration and you will find sandstorms, waves, flying hot air balloons, an aquarium with “Nemo” and “Dory,” and many other activates that will impress and include every member of the family.

Types of Exhibits

There are permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions at CosmoCaixa. During the summer the Museum offers workshops and interactive actives (with a surcharge). However, upon your first visit the Museum offers ample activities for the entire family that a second visit might be needed to take advantage of the extra workshops and activities.

Museum of Catalonian History

Catalonia is a unique place, and the Museum of Catalonian History allows you to explore and learn about its history in an interactive manner. The Museum fosters a love and curiosity for history by allowing kids of all ages to experience the history of Catalan through fun activities and games. The Museum is organized so that the visit has eight thematic sections that represent different historical scenes. Herein, children can irrigate a field, make flour, build a vault, and even become a knight!

Blau Museum: The natural Science Museum

Blau Museum is dedicated to the Natural Sciences and is located in Fòrum Park. The Museum is relatively new as it opened its doors in 2011. It occupies roughly 9,000 m2 and during your visit you can really delve into the history and knowledge of planet Earth.

The Museum does not have a very clear sign that would indicate the tour of your visit, so it is recommended to let your children’s curiosity and desires be the guide in this Museum. Some children might be more interested in the evolution of Planet Earth, while other might be more drawn to the sections that focus on animals, plants, or minerals. The visit is what you make of it, and is sure to please everyone’s interests and passions. Keep in mind that the souvenir shop is not open during the week.

The Egyptian Museum

One of the central Museums in Barcelona, the Egyptian Museum is located next to Passeig de Gràcia and has a collection of over 1,000 pieces from ancient Egypt. Mummies, funeral masks, and other funerary ritual objects can be found at this unique Museum. We recommend doing your visit with the proposed game of clues, and help your children solve the enigma and play the role of Indiana Jones. You can even learn to write your name in Hieroglyphics!

The Egyptian museum is perfect for little adventurers and future Egyptologists…or not! The visit allows you to find real mummies and engage all interests.

The Museum has three floors, and has a lift that allows access to all floors during the visit.

The Chocolate Museum

Driven by the Barcelona Pastry Guild, this Museum is located in the former convent of Sant Agustí. And of course, is a must see for any chocolate lover! You will get to know chocolate on a personal level, from its origins, to its medical properties, and even its nutritional values. But nonetheless, you will be impressed by the beautiful chocolate sculptures in the Museum. Children will be able to see some of their favorite Disney characters while at the Museum.

The Picasso Museum

The Picasso Museum is a key reference for understanding Picasso’s formative years of his artwork. There are roughly 4,200 works of art show in this Museum, ranging from oil paintings to pencil and ink sketches. This is a perfect place for families as the artwork is both imaginative and challenging. There are audio explanations available (for a surcharge) in various languages.
