Mosaic Park Güell Sign

Barcelona is a bustling metropolis full of things to do with kids. However, it can be hard to find space for them to run around in such a grand urban environment. Park Güell, one of beloved architect Antoni Gaudí’s most famous projects, is the perfect respite. What began as a housing development project at the turn of the 20th century turned into Barcelona’s most iconic park. It is known for its green space as well as its innovative and majestic architecture.

The park is remarkable for Gaudí’s adventurous and well-known style, full of bold colors and fun structures. Gaudí’s reverence and love for nature is seen in Park Güell, perhaps even more so than in La Sagrada Familia. He merges nature and art, and integrates his work into the curves of the mountain, rather than contradicting them. The park embraces the wild side of nature, and captures the attention of any child who likes to make their own path, as Gaudí did.

Route With Kids

Restricted Area With Kids

Start in the most well known area of the park, also called the “restricted” area. You’ll have to buy tickets in advance to ensure your entrance. There is a half an hour window from the time printed on your ticket to enter the park, but once inside, you can stay for however long you’d like! Before entering, be aware the the park is not stroller-friendly. Instead, opt for a baby carrier for the day! Your tickets do include a free shuttle bus from the metro that takes you right to the entrance so you can save your energy for exploring the park.

From that entrance, you’ll be only a short walk to the iconic mosaic bench with an incomparable view of the city. Snap a few photos of your kids in front of Barcelona and then take in the view together! You can find other views of the city they’ll love here. There’s even space for them to run around, but the ground of the Nature Square is dirt. They may get a little dusty! This is also a good time for a bathroom break, as there are public restrooms right by Nature Square.

Next, you and your kids can head towards the incredible formations of stone that Gaudí constructed, called “Portico of the Washerwoman.”  Your kids will love touching the brown stones and even sitting on the curved wall. The main part of the park is stunning, but also crowded so be sure to keep an eye on your kids. They’ll be amazed at the houses that look like they’re made of gingerbread and the colorful mosaic lizard which has become a symbol of Barcelona.

Unrestricted Area With  Kids

If you still want some park time with your kids in Barcelona, leave the restricted area behind. The unrestricted area boasts more stunning views of the city, picnic tables, cool architecture and space for your kids to run. The Gaudí museum is in the unrestricted area of the park, but tickets must be purchased separately. This could be a great opportunity for you to absorb more of the culture and history of Barcelona with your kids. Plan at least two hours at the park, depending on if your family focuses on seeing the main sights or prefers to make a whole day out of it. Either way, experiencing Park Güell with your kids will be unforgettable!
